YTTERBIUM NMR: Yb$sup 171$ NUCLEAR MOMENT AND Yb METAL KNIGHT SHIFT

Journal Article · · Physical Review (U.S.) Superseded in part by Phys. Rev. A, Phys. Rev. B: Solid State, Phys. Rev. C, and Phys. Rev. D
The nuclear magnetic resonance of Yb/sup 171/ was found in two nonmagnetic ytterbium compounds, gamma bCl/sub 2/ and YbS, from which a value of mu /sup 171/ = +0.4926 plus or minus 0.0004 mu /sub N/ is determined. From the Yb/sup 3+/ electr-on paramagnetic resonance measurements of the ratio of the hfs constants A/sup 171//A/sup 173/ it is found that mu /sup 173/ = -0.6772 plus or minus 0.0025 mu /sub N/. Observations of Yb/sup 171/ N MIR in elemental Yb metal and in the intermetallic compound YbAl/sub 2/ at temperatures of 1.8, 4.2, and 20.4 deg K yield values of the Knight shift of (0.0 plus or minus 0.1)%, and (7.76 plus or minus 0.05)%, respectively. The absence of amy detectable temperature dependence of the field for resonance indicates that the lowtemperature increase in the magnetic susceptibilities of these metals is caused by isolated, localized magnetic impurities. In gamma bAl/sub 2/, a constant susceptibility of 7.6 x 10/sup -4/ please delete the above abstract-----
