IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO CONTROL MEANS IN NUCLEAR REACTORS

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4005326
A reactor is described that has a reservoir of a liquid (e.g., Hg) that has a high thermal neutron absorption cross section ( sigma ). Annular channels, capillary tubes, or other means are provided such that a rise in reactor temperature above a given temperature, T, causes the poison liquid to enter the channel or tube; the resultant rise in the surface-to-volume ratio of the liquid causes a drop in the reactivity, so the temperature returns to T. A second liquid with low sigma may be used to push the poison liquid into the annular channel. (T. F. H.)
