IMPROVEMENTS RELATING TO NUCLEAR REACTORS

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4820836
A liquid having a high thermal neutron absorption coefficient is so contained in a reservoir connected to a channel of relatively narrow cross section that a rise in temperature beyond a predetermined level during operation of the reactor causes an increase in the quantity of material in the channel and a resultant increase in the surface to volume ratio of said liquid; thnns causes an increase in absorption of thermal neutrons and thus a decrease in reactivity of the reactor. According to an embodiment, the neutron-absorbing liquid, e.g. mercury, is contained in a reservoir connected to a capillary tube channel after the fashion of a thermometer. The said channel, which together with the reservoir may be made of stainless steel, is sealed at the end remote from this reservoir. (NPO)
