THE ACTIVATION CROSS SECTION OF $sup 108$Cd BY THERMAL NEUTRONS (in Russian)
y thermal neutrons was determined by comparing the /sup 109/Cd and /sup 115/Cd activities, which are formed on irradiating a cadmium sample for 100 hours in a heavy water reactor. The content of /sup 108/Cd in the cadmium sample was 49.8%. The ratio of /sup 108/Cd to /sup 115/Cd activities was found to be 1.17. The measurements were carried out on an iron-free BETA spectrometer 207 hours after the irradiation. Since the decay schemes of /sup 109/Cd and /sup 115/Cd are known, and the cross section for the formation of the metastable /sup 115/Cd state is also known ( = 1.1 plus or minus 0.3 barns), the results of three independent measurements gave a cross section of 2.7 plus or minus 0.9 barns for the /sup 108/Cd(n, gamma )/sup 109/Cd reaction. The half life of the metastable /sup 115/Cd state was found to be 53.8 plus or minus 1.8 hours, a value in agreement with the literature value. The half life of /sup 109/Cd was assumed to be 470 days in calculating the activation cross section of /sup 108/Cd. (TTT)
