(n,$alpha$) REACTIONS OF 14-Mev NEUTRONS WITH CADMIUM

Journal Article · · Soviet Phys. (Doklady)
OSTI ID:4315262

Metallic cadmium and its salts were irradiated with 4-Mev, 14-Mev, and fission neutrons. The radioactive palladium was precipitated and counted. No radioactivity was observed in the palladium fraction from the 4Mev irradiation. After irradiation with fission neutrons a 14-hr palladium activity was observed. Three radioactive components with half lives of 22 plus or minus 1 min, 5.5 plus or minus 0.2 hr, and 14.0 plus or minus 0.5 hr were observed following irradiation with 14-Mev neutrons. The 14-hr activity was assigned to Pd/sup 109/ and the 22 min activity, to Pd/sup 111/. The 5.5-hr activity was assigned to Pd/ sup 111m/. The cross sections for the reactions Cd/sup 112/(n, alpha )Pd/sup 109/ , Cd/sup 114/(n, alpha )Pd/sup (n,p)Pd/sup 109/ was calculated for 14-Mev neutrons. The values were 1.35 plus or minus 0.27, 0.51 plus or minus (J.S.R.)
