We investigate Cabibbo suppressed {ital D}{sup 0}, {ital D}{sup +}, and {ital D}{sup +}{sub {ital s}} radiative weak decays in order to find the best mode to test {ital c}{r_arrow}{ital u}{gamma} decay. Combining heavy quark effective theory and the chiral Lagrangian approach we determine the decay widths. We calculate {Gamma}({ital D}{sup 0}{r_arrow}{rho}{sup 0}/{omega}{gamma})/{Gamma}({ital D}{sup 0}{r_arrow}{ital {bar K}}{sup {asterisk}0}{gamma}), previously proposed to search for possible new physics. However, we notice that there are large, unknown, corrections within the standard model. We propose a better alternative, the ratio {Gamma}({ital D}{sup +}{sub {ital s}}{r_arrow}{ital K}{sup {asterisk}+}{gamma})/{Gamma}({ital D}{sup +}{sub {ital s}}{r_arrow}{rho}{sup +}{gamma}), and show that it is less sensitive to the standard model. {copyright} {ital 1996 The American Physical Society.}
