A calibration of the n-p elastic spin correlation parameter C{sub NN} at T{sub n}=183 MeV

The absolute normalization of the spin correlation parameter C{sub NN} for {tilde n}-{tilde p} scattering at intermediate energies is known to be sensitive to the {sup 1}P{sub 1} phase shift parameter. We have utilized a new technique to calibrate the normalization of C{sub NN} data previously taken at IUCF by simultaneous measurement of the {tilde n}-{tilde p} and {tilde p}-{tilde p} elastic scattering analyzing powers performed with a mixed beam containing polarized neutrons and protons. The p-p elastic scattering analyzing power has been previously determined to <1% in our energy regime in an experiment at IUCF using a cross-calibration to {tilde p} +{sup 12}C elastic scattering. We fit our {tilde p}-{tilde p} scattering yield to these data to determine the target polarization {+-}2%. Since charge symmetry holds for {tilde n}-{tilde p} scattering (A{sub n}=A{sub p}) to {approx}10{sup -3}, this target polarization fixes the neutron beam polarization to {+-}3%. Using these data we expect to determine the C{sub NN} normalization to about {+-}5%. Systematic errors in the analysis and C{sub NN} results will be discussed.
