Splat formation: ceramic particles on ceramic substrate

Book ·
OSTI ID:377754

The flattening and cooling processes of zirconia particles plasma sprayed onto zirconia substrates were monitored from the thermal radiation emitted by particles in flight and upon impact. The measurement device consisted of a laser sheet and a high-speed two-color pyrometer focused on the substrate surface. Information about the flattening degree and cooling rate was obtained and compared with that obtained on stainless steel substrates. In both cases, the substrate temperature was kept at 350--400 C and different preparations for substrate surface were investigated. The results showed the influence of surface roughness on particle impact and cooling.
