Dynamics of splat formation and solidification in thermal spraying processes
- Univ. of Limoges (France)
A measurement system consisting of two high-speed two-color pyrometers is used to monitor the flattening and cooling of particles on a substrate during plasma spray deposition. This instrument provides data on the deformation behavior and freezing of a particle when it impinges on the surface, in connection with its velocity, size and molten state at impact. In the present work, an attempt is made to find the dependence of the flattening degree and cooling rate on Reynolds number. Results on zirconia particles sprayed on a smooth steel substrate at 75 or 150 C are presented. They emphasize the influence of the temperature and the state of the surface on the particle spreading and cooling.
