Effect of particle velocity and substrate temperature on alumina and zirconia splat formation

Book ·
OSTI ID:160504

The aim of this paper is to show through investigations on splat formation the influence of particle parameters at impact and of substrate temperature. During plasma spraying, the flattening of the particles on the substrate is studied using either a set-up desired from the line-scan test or a system integrating two fast two-color pyrometers. These devices allow the authors to determine the distributions of diameter and shape factor of the collected lamellae on polished steel substrates as well as their cooling rate. Results on zirconia and alumina powders are presented for two particle size distributions: {minus}45 + 22 {micro}m and {minus}90 + 45 {micro}m. Two dc plasma torches and a RF plasma torch are used in order to get different ranges of particle velocity at impact. During spraying, the substrate temperature is hold either at 75 C or 300 C.
