Superfluidity and phase separation in {sup 3}He/{sup 4}He mixtures in aerogel
Confinement of {sup 3}He/{sup 4}He mixtures in aerogels has a profound effect on the topology of the phase diagram. In aerogel of 98 both superfluid density and heat capacity measurements indicate that the lambda line continues into the low {sup 4}He concentration region, i.e., the authors find a dilute {sup 4}He superfluid phase. On the high {sup 4}He concentration side of the phase diagram, heat capacity measurements show a lambda peak and a discontinuity associated with phase separation very similar to those observed in bulk mixtures. Although torsional oscillator measurements indicate that there exists a well defined point of phase separation on both sides of the phase diagram, heat capacity results fail to find a clear cut signature of phase separation for the mixture of low {sup 4}He concentration. Surprisingly, in 87 appears as if the phase diagram is restored to the bulk topology.
