Cobalt dicarbollide derivatives are currently being investigated for {sup 137}Cs{sup +} and {sup 90}Sr{sup +} removal from high level, liquid radioactive waste either as liquid-liquid solvent extractants or as the active sites of cation exchange on grafted polymer supports. Our research group has as a goal the synthesis and characterization of polymeric materials which incorporate cobalt dicarbollide in the main polymer chain. The focus of this research has been on attaching organic functional groups at the carbon sites of cobalt dicarbollide to produce derivatives with reactivity towards both condensation and addition polymerization. As part of this effort, the synthesis of polyester and polyamide monomers and model compounds of cobalt dicarbollide has been carried out. The spectroscopic properties of these compounds will be discussed.
