Deprotonation of cobalt dicarbollide using BuLi forms stable, isolable metallated species. In contrast, cesium metal reduction gave a structurally characterized d{sup 7} complex. The lithiated species react as nucleophiles, yielding new cobalt dicarbollide derivatives. Use of new cobalt dicarbollides for nuclear waste remediation, and in the synthesis of new polymers, is described.
