Condensation polymerization of cobalt dicarbollide
- Los Alamos National Lab., NM (United States)
Polymers containing the cobalt dicarbollide anion, [Co(C{sub 2}B{sub 9}H{sub 10}){sub 2}], in the main chain have potential application as cation exchange materials for the selective removal of 137Cs{sup +} and {sup 90}Sr{sup +2} from nuclear wastes. Our research is directed at the synthesis of complex [Co(LiC{sub 2}B{sub 9}H{sub 10}){sub 2}], as a starting material. Reaction of [Co(LiC{sub 2}B{sub 9}H{sub 10}){sub 2}] with CO{sub 2}/H{sup +} in the thf gives the dicarboxylic acid complex, [Co(C{sub 2}B{sub 9}H{sub 10}){sub 2}(COOH){sub 2}]. Two methods for the conversion of the dicarboxylic acid to a polyamide derivative, [Li]{sub n}[OC(C{sub 2}B{sub 9}H{sub 10})Co(C{sub 2}B{sub 9}H{sub 10})CONH(CH{sub 2}){sub 6}NH]{sub n} have been investigated. The spectroscopic properties of the monomers as well as the characterization of the polyamide by light scattering photometry and GPC methods will be discussed. Reaction of the dialcohol monomer, [Co(C{sub 2}B{sub 9}H{sub 10}){sub 2}(C{sub 2}H{sub 4}OH){sub 2}], formed by reaction of [Co(LiC{sub 2}B{sub 9}H{sub 10}){sub 2}] with CH{sub 2}OCH{sub 2}/H{sup +} in thf, with isocyanates provides entry into polyurethane chemistry and will also be discussed.
