Characterization of a cobalt dicarbollide polyamide by light scattering photometry and GPC methods
- and others
Condensation polymers of cobalt dicarbollide have potential application as ion exchange materials for the selective removal of {sup 137}Cs{sup +} and {sup 90}Sr{sup +2} from nuclear wastes. Recently, we carried out the condensation polymerization of the di-acid chloride, [Li(THF){sub x}][Co(C{sub 2}B{sub 9}H{sub 10}){sub 2}(COCl){sub 2}], with I{sub 2}N(CH{sub 2}){sub 6}NH{sub 2} in thf to give the polyamide product, [Li]{sub u}[-OC(C{sub 2}B{sub 9}H{sub 10})Co(C{sub 2}B{sub 9}H{sub 10})CONH(CH{sub 2}){sub 6}NH-], which has favorable solubility in DMSO. Currently we are pursuing the molecular weight characterization of the polyamide in DMSO by laser light scattering photometry and gel permeation chromatography. The molecular weight data and FTIR/NMR spectroscopic results of the polyamide will be discussed.
