The High-Efficiency Laundry Metering and Marketing Analysis (THELMA) project was conceived by EPRI and 28 utilities and other organizations as a Tailored Collaboration program to gather information for promoting energy- and water-saving laundry equipment. The research agenda calls for lab testing, qualitative and quantitative consumer research, and in-home metering of the energy and water use of conventional and horizontal-axis (H-axis) washers. This report presents the findings and conclusions from the THELMA distribution system analysis, one of the consumer research activities. The survey entailed telephone interviews with manufacturers, distributors, and retailers of laundry appliances in parts of the Pacific Northwest, Northern and Southern California, Idaho, and Florida. The interviews were structured to obtain information on the near-term availability of efficient washers in these areas; participants` attitudes toward and perception of H-axis washers; and the infrastructure, capital resources, and other aspects of the distribution system that could affect the availability of H-axis washers. The results sharpen understanding of the distribution system for clothes washers and help identify the utility activities (e.g., rebates, education, etc.) needed to influence consumer adoption of H-axis washers.
