The High-Efficiency Laundry Metering and Marketing Analysis (THELMA) project is gathering information to help transform the US clothes washer market from vertical axis (V-axis) clothes washers to more water- and energy-efficient horizontal axis (H-axis) washers. As an EPRI Tailored Collaboration project, THELMA is sponsored by EPRI and 28 electric, gas, water, and wastewater utilities, and related organizations, and includes lab testing, qualitative and quantitative consumer research, and in-home metering of conventional and H-axis machines. This report presents the results of one component of the consumer research activities: the Laundry Demonstration Center. At the Center, researchers introduced 100 consumers to two types of H-axis washers and collected their initial impressions and reactions to washer performance during a test wash. Although many Center participants were open-minded about H-axis washers and warmed appreciably to them over the course of the interview, they still asked for proof that H-axis machines are at least as good as the familiar V-axis washers. The participants` responses indicate that utilities may need to provide information and education to overcome knowledge barriers, and incentives to overcome cost barriers.
