Jigs, a kind of highly efficient and reliable equipment, have been widely used in China. However, because of the complexity of jig separation, it is difficult to build an exact mathematical model, which represents the relationship between product ash content and each variable. Therefore, jig automation is far from satisfactory. At the present time, jig operation is largely based on the operator`s experience, which undoubtedly leads to jig unsteady operation. The key to jig automatic control is the control of jig feed capacity, air cycle, water capacity and discharge rate, and hence control of each product quality on-line. The present methods of investigation of jig process are usually by monitoring floater, bed loosening and bed pressure. However, the relationship between floater density and pollution index, bed pressure and pollution index, bed loosening and air and water cannot be found. The authors have collected about 75 sets of float-sink analysis from 7 coal preparation plants in China. By statistical analysis of the float-sink analysis of refuse for each plant, it is found that a linear relationship exists between refuse ash content and the mass fraction of {minus}1.8.
