The economically and ecologically reasonable tendencies for efficient utilization of energy sources including hard coal result in development of the new techniques of coal preparation and combustion. One of the perspective directions is utilization of coal as the liquid fuel in form of coal-water slurry. Liquid fuels based on coal representing substitute for crude oil derived fuels are particularly useful for small and medium scale energy units. In case of using upgraded coals for production of liquid fuel, coal-water slurry can be burnt in ecological way. The major advantage of such fuels is the possibility of their burning at the existing oil burners after the minor modification of the supplying and burning equipment. The Institute for Chemical Processing of Coal has continued since the beginning of nineties investigations on the technology for production of ecological, highly concentrated suspension fuels based on selected domestic hard coal. This paper describes the preparation of fuel slurries and the application tests to which they were put. The results of investigations performed show the possibility to produce and apply the highly concentrated (70%) stable coal-water slurry fuel for combustion as a fuel replacing fuel oil or mazout. The combustion process is stable for the wide range of parameters and offers high efficiency of fuel conversion.
