Coal water mixture is the most advantageous alternative to oil and gas because it excludes the need of coal handling equipment and eliminates oil completely. The availability of CWM is determined. The combustion system is being worked out in a burner atomizer optimization program. A hardware configuration that will provide CWM stable ignition, reasonable turndown, and efficient carbon utilization is being developed. Fuel analyses of Upper Freeport and Pittsburgh 8 coals are made according to fuel ash and the burning profile. As for plant design, the capacity available when firing CWM is determined by designs of furnace heat input burner, burner clearances, plant area heat release, and other parameters. Conversion costs are listed, proving that conversion to CWM is significantly less than conversion from oil to direct pulverized coal.
