This paper presents the merits of two different microwave discharges as excitation sources for atomic emission spectroscopy. The first part shows the excellent analytical results obtained by using a plasma produced by surfatron in the determination of halogens, even using low power and argon as plasma gas. The last part of the paper presents the first results of a helium plasma produced by a new microwave plasma torch (TIA design). From them, this plasma seems to be a good candidate to extend the application range of microwave plasmas used as excitation sources. {copyright} {ital 1996 American Institute of Physics.}
