The combined effect of Ti and B, in amounts up to 600 and 200 ppM, respectively, on the microstructure and properties of C-Mn shielded metal arc welds was studied. It was found that Ti enhanced the formation of acicular ferrite in as-deposited weld metal. A strong interactive phenomenon was encountered, with controlled additions of B inducing a further increase in acicularity and changing the Ti level required for optimum toughness in the bulk of the deposits. It is concluded, for the specific oxygen and nitrogen levels encountered, that optimization, for both the as-welded and the stress-relieved condition, is attained when Ti and B are set at 400 ppM and 40 ppM, respectively.
