The effect of aluminum on the microstructure and properties of C-Mn shielded metal arc welds containing titanium and boron has been studied at three levels of nitrogen, namely 65, 130 and 230 ppm. Strong interactive phenomena were encountered, with nitrogen inducing a change in acicularity and lowering the tensile properties. Aluminum contents up to 170 ppm led to the notch toughness being critically degraded by nitrogen, whereas amounts in excess of this responded beneficially to the addition of nitrogen. It is concluded that nitrogen control is a requisite for the microalloyed Ti-B-Al weld metal combination.
