This investigation forms part of a joint program, within Sub-Commission IIA of the international Institute of Welding (IIW), to study the factors affecting the microstructure and properties of multrirun shielded metal arc welds. The influence of titanium, in isolation [1] and in combination with aluminum [2], has previously been evaluated, and it has now been considered expedient to extend the work to include the interactive Ti-B system. Basic, low hydrogen E 7018 type electrodes were prepared as in the earlier work, the coatings being adjusted to yield deposited metals containing 0.07% C, 1.4% Mn and 03% Si. Different amounts of pure titanium metal and ferroboron were added to the dry mixes to produce 40 analytical variants, covering the combined ranges of up to 600 ppm Ti and 200 ppm B in the deposits. The multirun weldments were prepared according to ISO 2560 and chemical analyses, quantitative metallography and mechanical tests were conducted. As expected, boron additions alone had only a marginal influence on Charpy toughness, whereas the transfer of even a very small amount of Ti (35 ppm) had a marked effect. It was found, for the specific oxygen and nitrogen levels under consideration, that the best Charpy-V values, for both the as-welded and the stress-relieved condition, occurred when 400 ppm Ti was in combination with 40 ppm B.
