Pion double charge exchange on selenium isotopes

Journal Article · · Bulletin of the American Physical Society
OSTI ID:243617
The differential cross sections of the ({pi}{sup +},{pi}{sup {minus}}) reaction on selenium isotopes (A = 76,78,80,82) leading to the double isobaric analog states, at 5{degrees} with 294 MeV incident pion energy, have been measured at LAMPF using the EPICS facility. The target material was in the form of elemental powder with each isotope placed separately in strip target cells. The isotopic enrichment for each target was about 600 mg/cm{sup 2}. The authors report on the measured cross sections. The data disagree with a simple dependence on A and the number of excess neutron pairs. If the data are used to extract the two amplitudes in the generalized seniority model of pion double charge exchange (DCX) then the fitted short-range amplitude overpredicts the cross sections of pion DCX transitions to the ground states.
