In this paper is described the design work on Francis turbine runners in order to obtain cavitation free operation. The most important parameters are the speed number or specific speed which can be expressed by the circumferential speed of the blade outlet and the blade angle. Other important factors are the reaction ratio and the blade leaning angle. A discussion will be given on the influence of the above mentioned parameters and a design procedure in order to obtain cavitation free operation for a given suction head for a Francis turbine.
