The yield has been determined for the excitation of {sup 180}Ta{sup g}(J{sup {pi}}=1{sup +}) from the {sup 181}Ta({gamma},n) reaction by measurements of {gamma} rays emitted following the electron capture and {beta} decays of 8.15 h ground state. The probability {sigma}{sub m}/({sigma}{sub m}+{sigma}{sub g}) for the production of the {sup 180}Ta{sup m} isomer (J{sup {pi}}=9{sup -}) after {gamma} absorption was deduced. The role of initial and final spin on reaction yield, along with the relevance for nucleosynthesis of {sup 180}Ta{sup m}, is discussed.
