The selective accumulation from externally generated low ion currents in an FTICR mass spectrometer can be effectively accomplished. The selective ion accumulation process can facilitate many types of studies, and is particularly effective in conjunction with continuous injection from an electrospray source. However, this technique also requires relative high background gas pressure ({ge} 10{sup -5} Torr), which can limit the optimal performance for subsequent FTICR measurements at pressure of {approximately}10{sup -8} Torr and below. To resolve these conflicting demands, the authors have designed a new dual cell-type of ion trap. The first cell is sealed in a box which is slightly larger than the cell itself.
