The many forms of carbon have interesting and diverse properties. Diamond, amorphous diamond (amorphous sp{sup 3} carbon) graphite, amorphous carbon (amorphous sp{sup 2} carbon) amorphous sp{sup 3}/sp{sup 2} solutions with and without hydrogen, Diamond-Like Carbon (DLC) all have particular utility in tribological applications such that friction and wear coatings have extensive potential industrial application. The particular application will be dependent on the deposition process, the contact surface chemistry, hardness, surface finish, the loading and speed of the interfacial motion and the environment in which the surfaces are contained. This paper will review these materials and their tribological applications.
