Fe-Ni-Ti binder phases for TiB{sub 2}-based cermets: A thermodynamic approach
As reported before, in order to avoid the formation of undesirable secondary borides, a minimum amount of Ti must be added to the raw TiB{sub 2}-(Fe,Ni) composition, this minimum amount having been experimentally established for TiB{sub 2}-(Fe,30 wt%Ni) cermets. However, some other (Fe,Ni)-metallic phases could be candidates for binder phases in TiB{sub 2}-cermets. Therefore, the determination of the required amount of Ti for any Fe:Ni ratio should be useful for further works on this type of materials. With this aim, a set of TiB{sub 2}{approximately}20vol%(Fe, xNi) cermets [being 0{le}x (at %) {le}100] with different additions of Ti has been sintered and microstructurally analyzed. This characterization has been carried out in terms of the composition of the binder phase, and especially, of the determination of the absence or presence of secondary borides. The results have been observed to qualitatively agree with theoretical predictions.
