Solutions of (dfepe){sub 2}Ir{sub 2}({mu}-H){sub 3}(H) (1; dfepe = (C{sub 2}F{sub 5}){sub 2}PCH{sub 2}CH{sub 2}P(C{sub 2}F{sub 5}){sub 2}) react with 1 atm of ethylene at ambient temperatures to catalytically produce a mixture of trans- and cis-2-butenes and the diiridium methylallyl complex (dfepe){sub 2}Ir{sub 2}({mu}-{eta}{sup 1}:{eta}{sup 3}-C{sub 4}H{sub 6})({mu}-H)(H) (2).
