Charm photoproduction in perturbative QCD and in the quark-gluon string model

The cross section for charm photoproduction at high energies is calculated in perturbative QCD and in the quark-gluon string model (QGSM). In the case of QCD, the role of absorptive corrections to parton structure functions is considered. It is shown that such corrections can significantly reduce the cross section for charm photoproduction at high energies and, especially, diminish the relative contribution of processes that are determined by the parton structure of photons. In the case of the QGSM, a significant contribution of the {open_quotes}intrinsic charm{close_quotes} in the photon is required in order to attain agreement with experimental data on the total cross section for charm photoproduction and on the shape of the D{sup 0}-meson spectrum. The relation between the contributions from various processes in perturbative QCD and in the QGSM is discussed. Predictions at HERA energies are made. 42 refs., 6 figs., 2 tabs.
