Cathodic protection system using aclose coupled mixed metal oxide (MMO) anode is the corrosion prevention technique for soil-side of the aboveground storage tank (AST) bottoms. MMO anodes generate oxygen at its surfacesdue to water electrolysis at polarized potentials above a threshold; oxygen from the MMO anodes can depolarize the bottoms’polarized potentials. Further, when the tank bottom plate loses contact with the sand pad due to flexing, oxygen can accumulate in the void space and accelerate corrosion. This paper provides information on preventive measures that can be adopted to prevent oxygen concentration corrosion of the AST soil-side bottoms
