Analyses of edge settlement in riveted aboveground storage tanks built on earth pads have been performed using non-linear finite element techniques. The allowable strain criteria used in the evaluation of the fitness-for-service of welded tanks may not be applicable to tanks of riveted bottom-to-shell construction. In some cases, riveted bottom-to-shell seams lose tightness before the strain reaches maximum allowable limits. Non-linear finite element analyses have been performed to evaluate the leak-tightness of this critical joint. Further parametric studies will be needed to develop a settlement evaluation procedure for tanks of riveted bottom-to-shell construction.
