There are a number of issues which arise in the modeling and design of photovoltaic cells for use in thermophotovoltaic (TPV) systems which make the design of these cells significantly different from those of one sun terrestrial or space cells. Some of the issues are the same as those that must be addressed in high concentration applications and in fact some of the early TPV cell designs were used in high concentration cells. This paper discusses these issues and illustrates their impact on cell performance. {copyright} {ital 1995} {ital American} {ital Institute} {ital of} {ital Physics}.
