This is a tutorial paper, reviewing photovoltaic principles, and their application to thermophotovoltaic (TPV) power generators. The treatment is not rigorous, but is intended to give a working model for the workshop attendees. The options available to TPV converter designers are described to help in the optimization of all components of the TPV system. {copyright} {ital 1995} {ital American} {ital Institute} {ital of} {ital Physics}.
