In studies of phase equilibria in the Yb-Fe-Ge system at 670 K, the authors found a compound whose X-ray diffraction pattern was similar to those of compounds with the ZrFe{sub 4}Si{sub 2} structure. The purpose of this work was to determine the crystal structure of this new ternary germanide, YbFe{sub 4}Ge{sub 2}.
