Ways to encourage greater natural gas use: A purchaser perspective

Conference ·
OSTI ID:146405
Ways to encourage natural gas use are discussed. In 1992, the Marketing Subcommittee of the Natural Gas Committee of the State of Texas Energy Policy partnership (STEPP) reported the following: The primary obstacle to the greater use of natural gas for electric generation lies in a basic lack of understanding between the electric utilities and the gas industry about each other`s operations and economics. Texas electric utilities have been large gas consumers since the creation of the natural gas industry. Although mutual understanding could probably be improved, the gas and electric utility industries in Texas pretty well understand each other. Outside of Texas, however, a great deal of work needs to be done to improve mutual knowledge and understanding. Also, the greatest potential for growth which displaces other fuels--lies outside Texas. In the North American Electric Reliability Council`s (NERC) Reliability Council`s (NERC) Reliability Assessment 1994-2003, one of the key issues identified in maintaining adequate resources to meet projected future electric demands is improving operational coordination of natural gas delivery with electric generating unit dispatch.
