Spectral luminescent properties of compounds of praseodymium (III) chloride with some alkali-metal chlorides of Me{sub 3}PrCl{sub 6} (Me=K, Rb, Cs) in a polycrystalline state are investigated. The absorption spectra of the Pr{sup 3+} ion in compounds of this type are shown to depend substantially on the nature of the alkali-metal cation. A comparative analysis of the praseodymium absorption spectra in Me{sub 3}PrCl{sub 6} and Cs{sub 2}NaPrCl{sub 6} polycrystals showed that the spectrum of Cs{sub 3}PrCl{sub 6} is completely related to the [PrCl{sub 6}]{sup 3-} complex. The less strong dependence of the luminescence and excitation spectra of Pr{sup 3+} on the nature of the alkali-metal cation and also a constant value of {tau}{sub exp} Pr{sup 3+} for chloride complexes of praseodymium under study is explained by strong mixing of the 5d and 4f electronic states of the Pr{sup 3+} ion in polycrystals. 10 refs., 4 figs., 2 tabs.
