Measurements have been made on the absorption spectra of PuCl/sub 3/, Gd(Pu)Cl/sub 3/, and PrCl/sub 3/ between room temperature and 1100 K at 0.4-2.5 ..mu..m. The supersensitivity criterion is considered for the intensities of the Pu(III) and Pr(III) spectra. Evidence is obtained for supersensitive behavior in the /sup 3/F/sub 2/ reverse arrow /sup 6/H/sub 5/2/ for Pu(III). Plutonium and praseodymium trichlorides melt with change from ninefold to mainly sixfold f-element coordination, while the Pu-Cl and Pr-Cl distances shorten considerably; the metal-chlorine distances shorten further as the liquid is heated.
