The interaction between PrCl/sub 3/ and NaCl-KCl is of great interest for the development of treatment methods for ores containing rare earths and for the preparation of metallic Pr by molten bath electrolysis. The co- crystallization method was used for the studies, which involved the determination of cooling curves. The component binaries PrCl/sub 3/KCl and NaCl-KCl were previously investigated. The PrCl/sub 3/- NaCl system was studied under dry HCl atmosphere to prevent the decomposition of the PrCl/sub 3/. It was found to contain a eutectic at 37 mole % PrCl/sub 3/ with a melting point of 488 plus or minus 2 deg C. The ternary system itself was examined in 6 internal sections. The stable K/sub 3/PrCl/sub 6/- NaCl system contained a eutectic at 18.4% PrCl/ sub 3/, 26.4% NaCl and 55.2% KCl (in mole%), with a melting point of 530 plus or minus 2 deg C; at 585 deg C a polymorphic transformation of the compound K/sub 3/ FrCl/sub 6/ takes place. On the basis of the data obtained the phase diagram of the system could be determined: the surface of the liquidus consists of 5 primary crystallization fields, corresponding to the separation of PrCl/sub 3/, NaCl, KCl, K/sub 2/PrCl/sub 5/, and K/sub 3/PrCl/sub 6/ from the melt.
