The International Solar Energy Society (ISES) is the only worldwide organization devoted to the advancement of solar energy. The society has members on all continents in over 90 countries organized in national Sections. ASES is the US National Section of ISES. The Society was founded in the US but its headquarters are now in Australia. While the main emphasis in the past has been on the furthering of technical progress and the dissemination of technical information through conferences and journals, ISES has recently also taken on a larger role. It has been accepted by the United Nations as a consultative Non-Governmental Institution and has provided considerable input to the Earth Summit Conference in Rio. The recommendations included in this paper were discussed and formulated in a series of worldwide Round Table Conferences preceding the Rio Conference. They include the following aspects: institutional, social, economic, and political. Next is a discussion of solar energy and sustainable development illustrated with a description of a completely energy independent residential building which has only solar energy as input. A number of the recommendations were included in the draft papers for Rio but most of them were eliminated due to opposition of the US and some of the oil-producing Arab Nations.
