Solar energy contributions for sustainable development
- Fraunhofer Institut fuer Solare Energie Systeme, Freiburg (Germany)
The International Solar Energy Society (ISES) is the only worldwide organization devoted to the advancement of solar energy. ISES has done this for the past 36 years through good and hard times. The society has members on all continents in over 90 countries organized in national Sections. ASES is the United States National Section of ISES. The Society was founded in the USA but its headquarters are now in Australia. While the main emphasis has been in the past on the furthering of technical progress and the dissemination of technical information through conferences and journals ISES has recently also taken on a bigger role. We have been accepted by the United Nations as a consultative Non-Governmental Institution and have provided considerable input to the Rio Conference. These recommendations have been discussed and formulated in a series of worldwide Round Table Conferences preceding the Rio Conference. Before showing you the most important of these recommendations, it is interesting to reflect on their impact on the Rio Process. When starting this involvement we had very little hope of any major impact but it turned out that at the beginning of the Rio Conference the delegates had very little knowledge of energy problems and accepted our information with great interest. A number of the recommendations found their way into the draft papers for Rio but most of them were eliminated in Rio. The major culprits were the United States and some oil producing Arab Nations. The recommendations are reproduced here. 2 figs., 3 tabs.
