The oxidation kinetics of graphite specimens from subreactor rooms of the fourth block of the Chernobyl atomic energy station and GMZ-grade graphite are studied. The rate constant of oxidation (0.24 g{center_dot}cm{sup {minus}2}{center_dot}h{sup {minus}1}) is determined. The times for complete burning of the graphite blocks in the reactor core and for which they were in contact with molten lava-like fuel-containing masses in room 305/2 during the active stage of the accident are estimated.
