Graphite specimens from the central hall and subreactor rooms of the fourth block of the Chernobyl atomic energy station (CAES) are investigated. Radiocesium exists in the graphite as two species. One is chemically active (resulting from condensation or sorption of Cs vapors). The other is inert and fixed in fuel particles as surface contamination. The maximum possible released {sup 14}C and the amount of fuel in the subreactor rooms are estimated.
