Remediation of Navy and Marine Corps sites under environmental restoration program
- OHM Remediation Services Corp., Walnut Creek, CA (United States)
As a forerunner to the more than $1.7 billion in Remedial Action Contracts (RACs) recently solicited by the US Navy, the Naval Energy and Environmental Support Activity (now referred to as the Naval Facilities Engineering Service Center--or NFESC) has for the past three years provided Navy and Marine Corps facilities nationwide with the means to remediate their hazardous waste sites. Eight contaminant-specific contracts worth $150 million dollars were awarded by NFESC in the early 1990s to provide the Navy with a pilot program to judge the effectiveness of performing full-scale remedial actions. Innovative technologies such as Steam-Injection Vacuum Extraction (SIVE), in addition to more traditional remediation techniques such as transportation and disposal at a landfill, are being successfully implemented at these Department of Defense (DOD) sites. The forecast for 1994 is that at least another $15--$20 million will be awarded to OHM to continue working on additional remediation projects nationwide.
