Changing financial policies in electric utilities are generally adaptations to the realities of a market-based world. If that means less predictable returns and less of a dividend, then the utility has to expect new kinds of shareholders. Electric utility stocks are ideal investments for widows, orphans, and retirees who value high dividend growth. Everyone needs electricity, and electric utilities operate in a monopolistic marketplace. Pursue the stocks, bonds, or preferred issues with the highest dividend yield or interest rate. Put the certificate in the vault. Why worry?
