This article addresses the financial condition of Gulf States Utilities Company. It addresses the utilities' inability to get its investment in the River Bend nuclear plant into the rate base and the impact this had on the utilities economic stability and its ability to pay dividends to holders of preferred and preference stock. The results of the preferred and preference stockholders achieving control of the utility is also discussed.
