Students in the laboratory: A model industry-school partnership

Scientists at R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company (RJR) established a partnership with the Western Triad Region of the North Carolina Science and Mathematics Alliance to successfully sponsor a science and technology shadow educational program for local students. The objective of this initiative was to promote and improve science and technology education among female and minority students throughout the Western Triad Region of North Carolina by exposing eighth grade students and their teachers to practical applications of science and technology in the RJR laboratories. Eighth grade students and teachers spent a day touring the laboratories in RJR`s research and development facility and visiting with scientists during a routine work day. This enabled students to {open_quotes}shadow{close_quotes} a scientists in an area relevant to the North Carolina eighth grade science curriculum. Students and teachers shared lunch with {open_quotes}their scientists{close_quotes} and everyone participated in a very successful formal panel discussion regarding career potential in the science field.
