This project is designed to improve science education at the elementary school level by facilitating collaborative efforts among teachers, science coordinators, principals, and representatives of local industries. The project is funded by the National Science Foundation and six Boston-area companies. In conjunction with these companies, we developed six sample modules which provide students with concrete examples of products, processes, and technologies that demonstrate scientific principles found in the elementary school science curriculum. These sample modules include {open_quotes}Treating Vascular Disease{close_quotes} with Boston Scientific Corporation, {open_quotes}Decision-Making Processes{close_quotes} with Clearpoint Corporation, {open_quotes}Patterns in Miniature{close_quotes} with Digital Equipment Corporation, {open_quotes}Inventing the Pen{close_quotes} with the Gillette Company, and {open_quotes}Fiber Optics Communication{close_quotes} with Peter Fuller Oldsmobile, Inc. One hundred participants worked with these sample modules during summer workshops and then, using them as guides, developed their own modules with businesses and industries in their communities.
